Captain America: The Winter Soldier - Review
Captain America: The Winter Soldier – April 4, 2014
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is Marvel’s best superhero film. This franchise continues to stand above the rest with its sophisticated story and thrilling action. The Disney/Marvel Universe seamlessly evolves through The Winter Soldier and progresses the overarching saga. Why aren’t the other franchises held to this standard?
Unlike Iron Man, Thor or The Hulk, Captain America is a government weapon. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) doesn’t have his own agenda and joined S.H.I.E.L.D. to protect the people and their freedoms. The other great aspect of this character is that because he was frozen in time, he stills acts like a guy from the 1940s. Steve Rogers is an old fashion hero in modern times and those parallels play into the movie as well.
The Winter Soldier is more of a political thriller than a superhero movie. The exciting story not only works for the continuation of the Marvel Universe but it also deals with real world issues of security and government oversight. Captain America has to investigate corruption within S.H.I.E.L.D. and face off against a new enemy. These new threats challenge all the characters and evolve their personal journeys.
The entire cast did an amazing job of keeping this movie fresh and entertaining from start to finish. The Falcon was the perfect addition to the franchise and I look forward to seeing him again. It was also nice to see Nick Fury in more action scenes than just conducting meetings all the time. Everyone’s motives, desires and fears were realistic and believable, which made this movie even stronger.
There were plenty of action sequences and they all became progressively bigger and more intense. Most importantly, the action never feels out of place or unnecessary because it’s always building from the story. Directors Anthony & Joe Russo previously worked on TV comedies like Community and Arrested Development. So I was pleasantly surprised to see them deliver a high-quality final product. The attention to detail is unlike any other superhero movie since The Dark Knight.
Overall, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is an absolute must-see. New audiences will be able to go into this fresh without needing to see the previous movies. All the characters, drama and action are perfectly divided up throughout the film. Be sure to stick around after all the credits! There are a total of two extra scenes. You can skip the 3D, but if there is an IMAX screen near you, I would strongly recommend watching it on that.
