Man Of Steel - Review
Man Of Steel – June 14, 2013 (10/10)
Man Of Steel is a masterpiece. I haven’t been so swept away by a movie since I was a kid. This is the ultimate Superman story. It’s as if Batman Begins and The Dark Knight were one movie. The collaboration between Zach Snyder & Christopher Nolan made for one of the greatest superhero movies.
Usually in other superhero origin-stories there is a delay between man and hero. But the great thing about Superman is that he’s born with his powers. So he can start saving people early on in his life. And with the film’s incredible pacing, this epic story will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.
The story is what really makes this movie so great. There is so much going on but it all flows together seamlessly. You have Superman’s real parents sending their newborn son off to another world. General Zod is trying to save his race by any means necessary. Young Clark Kent has to deal with hiding his powers along with searching for his purpose. The Kent family has to raise this super child while protecting him from the world. Then on top of all of that, Superman has to become the hero that both of his families destined him to be.
With all that going on, you would think that there wouldn’t be time for a lot of action. But the movie is filled with it from beginning to end. From the trailers, I thought there was going to be too many CGI effects. But because of the movie’s lighting, the CGI blends right into the other environments (much like 300). There is so much destruction here that it’s impossible to be let down. My only problem with the movie is that there was a lot of blatant product placement (including a fight inside an IHOP). But it’s minor enough that I’ll let it slide.
Overall, Man Of Steel is the Superman movie that fans have been waiting for. The darker tone is absolutely perfect. Some critics were complaining that it wasn’t light-hearted enough. Which is a stupid reason not to like something. This story is raw and unapologetic and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
